June
Hancock Park
Project perspective
June is a Spanish Colonial Revival house in Hancock Park by Apel Design, kept whole at the street and opened at the back to a garden, a pool and a loggia built to belong to it.
The design story
Hancock Park is a historic district, and what the street can see is reviewed before a permit is issued. June answers that on its own terms rather than arguing with it. The front is a Spanish Colonial Revival composition held intact: a round stair turret beside the entry, a clay tile roof, deep-set windows with timber shutters, and a planted forecourt lit low so the house reads at dusk without floodlighting. Nothing on that elevation announces that the house has been worked on, which in a district like this one is the point.
Behind it the house opens completely. A brick terrace runs the width of the garden to a pool with a tiled spa set into its end, a fountain sits on the lawn axis, and a loggia under a timber pergola carries an outdoor kitchen and seating so the garden is usable through the year. Indoors the rooms are handled the same way: a kitchen in dark timber and marble with two islands, and a bathroom in white marble with a freestanding tub, both detailed to sit with the age of the house rather than against it.
