Dusk view of the pool deck and faceted volume at Shoreham, by Apel Design

Shoreham

West Hollywood

Project perspective

Shoreham is a contemporary residence in West Hollywood by Apel Design, a house of folded dark volumes and pale plaster that climbs from a street-level garage to a terrace above the city.

The design story

From the street, Shoreham reads as two materials in tension: pale plaster planes and a dark, faceted volume that folds down across the front. An exterior stair with a glass rail climbs the face of that volume, the pool sits behind a glass side wall so the water shows from the road as a lit block at dusk, and a glass sectional door opens the garage beneath. The lower level holds a lounge with an open-riser stair, a glass elevator and a stone bar beside a living green wall. At the back the same faceted skin wraps a wood deck, where sliding glass walls draw the living room out to the pool.

The main floor is one continuous room of pale wide-plank floors, dark wood cabinetry and grey stone. Tufted leather seating faces a glass wine wall lit by crossing light bars, a full-height wood door slides on an exposed track, and the kitchen runs along a ribbon window that frames a living green wall, its stone island carrying a cantilevered wood table. At the corner the glass wall slides fully away, and a hanging cocoon chair marks the threshold between the living room and the pool deck.

One bedroom suite is arranged as an open sequence: a bed against a faceted feature wall, a linear fireplace facing it, corner glass to its own terrace, a freestanding concrete bathtub set against floor-to-ceiling glass and bamboo, a marble trough basin under an oval ceiling light, and a glass shower with a wood floor beside the dressing room. The other bedrooms repeat the idea of the bath behind glass, and a shower room with a dark wood ceiling adds a bench and twin rain heads. On the upper terrace, an outdoor kitchen, a fire feature and a spa sit in front of the city skyline.

Bring us the ambition, the difficult site, or the project that needs to become clear.
