Project perspective

Surfside is a coastal Malibu project by Apel Design, taken from excavation through foundation walls above the shoreline.

The design story

Surfside begins where coastal projects are decided: in the ground. Excavation, shoring and formwork were sequenced against a sloping site within sight of the water, where soil, drainage and access all narrow the options.

The waterproofed foundation walls stepping across the site are the visible result of that groundwork, and the reason the building above can sit where the design intends.
