Project perspective

The Blue is a Malibu residence by Apel Design, combining hand-set stone veneer, sculptural plaster and custom casework.

The design story

The Blue is a study in two materials worked by hand. Masons set stone veneer course by course from scaffolding across the elevations, while plasterers built up the adjoining walls, so the two surfaces meet as one considered facade rather than a cladding change.

Inside, the same logic continues. A curved plaster island is formed on site rather than delivered, and casework, farmhouse sink and patterned tile are fitted to the room they sit in. The project is a clear record of what architecture-led building allows when the detail is decided in the field.
